We test the gear so you don't waste the filament

An independent 3D printing bench · 64 products · 21 brands · since 2021

PrintPlume started in a two-car garage in 2021, surrounded by spools, a half-disassembled delta and enough failed prints to wallpaper a small house. It became this site because we were tired of reviews that read like they were written by someone who had never levelled a bed, cleared a clog, or watched a twelve-hour print peel off the plate on the final layer.

What we actually do

We buy 3D printing gear, run it through the same tests every time, and write down what happened. As of July 2026 the bench holds 64 products from 21 brands, spread across 10 categories: FDM Printer (29), Resin Printer (8), Filament (7), Accessory (6), Resin (4), Slicer Software (4), CAD Software (2), Post-Processing Equipment (2), SLS Printer (1), Tool (1). The average score across everything we have published is 4.4 out of 5 — we are not handing out fives.

The bench

Every machine that arrives gets assembled the way a customer would assemble it, from the box, with the supplied tools and the supplied instructions. We time it. We note every place the manual lies. Then it runs our standard suite:

  • 3DBenchy at 0.2 mm on the stock profile — no tuning, no tricks. This is the number in our comparison tables.
  • Dimensional accuracy — a calibration cube measured on all three axes with the same set of calipers, five prints deep.
  • Overhang, bridging and retraction towers to find where the cooling gives up.
  • Noise, A-weighted, one metre from the frame, mid-print, in a quiet room.
  • A long print — twelve hours minimum — because first impressions do not catch a Z-wobble.

Filaments and resins run across multiple machines rather than one, so we can separate a bad spool from a bad printer. Software gets scored on how long it takes to slice a 50 MB model, how often it falls over across forty hours of use, and how much of that time you spend fighting it.

How the scores work

Every product carries five sub-scores appropriate to what it is — a printer is judged on print quality, speed, ease of use, value and reliability; a filament on consistency, finish, ease of printing, value and strength. The headline number is the average of those five. It is not a vibe, and it is not weighted by what a brand paid us, because no brand pays us.

Where the money comes from. PrintPlume runs on affiliate commissions and display advertising. If you buy through one of our links we may earn a small cut, at no extra cost to you. That relationship has never determined a score, a ranking or a verdict — and the products we recommend most often are frequently not the ones that pay best. If that ever changes, this paragraph changes with it.

What we choose to cover

We follow what readers ask about: the budget machine under $300, the resin printer for miniature painters, the enclosed system that will survive ASA. We read the forums and the subreddits and the emails. We also deliberately cover underdogs, not just the brands with the largest advertising budgets, because some of the best value in this hobby comes from companies most people have never heard of.

  • We buy most of what we test. Anything supplied free is labelled as such in the review.
  • Every review lists what we did not like. If a product cannot be recommended, we say so and it still gets a page.
  • Scores are never adjusted for advertising relationships or commission rates.
  • Each review is fact-checked by a second person against manufacturer documentation before it goes up.
  • We revisit old reviews when firmware, pricing or long-term reliability changes the picture, and we date every update.
